Zafit AI vs Fitbit Premium: No Bracelet Required

By Abhishek Sivaraman · 2026-05-06 · 8 min read

Fitbit invented the consumer wearable category. Then Google bought it in 2021, gradually merged Fitbit accounts into Google accounts, and started gating insights behind Fitbit Premium at $9.99/month. In 2026, the open question is whether you need the bracelet at all when your phone already does most of the same things.

The Google ecosystem lock-in

Since 2023, Fitbit account migration to Google is mandatory for new users. Your sleep, HR, steps, weight and menstrual cycle data sit in your Google profile — the same profile that already knows your email, calendar, location history and YouTube watch history. If that's a privacy concern for you, the bracelet itself is the problem, not the price.

Zafit runs sensor processing on-device, stores derived metrics in a region-isolated account, and is not connected to any ad-network identity graph.

The hidden Fitbit cost

Fitbit trackers ship with non-user-replaceable batteries that degrade in 18–24 months. Many of the "Charge 4 still works fine" stories you read online are from 2021. By month 24 you're either replacing the device or living with sub-2-day battery life. A phone-based platform has no such timer.

Verdict

Fitbit Premium is a paywall around features that should have stayed free, on top of a bracelet whose battery dies in two years, owned by an ad company. Zafit AI replaces ~80% of Fitbit's day-to-day value using the phone you already own — and adds nutrition, body comp, bloodwork and AI coaching that Fitbit doesn't offer at any price.

Frequently asked

Can Zafit import my Fitbit history?

Yes — Fitbit data export → CSV import into Zafit covers steps, sleep, weight and HR history.

Does Zafit replace continuous heart-rate tracking?

If you wear any compatible watch or ring, yes — Zafit reads it. Phone-only, HR is on-demand via camera. For 24/7 HR you still need a wearable.

Is Fitbit Premium worth $9.99/month?

Marginal. Most of what Premium unlocks (readiness, workout videos, advanced sleep) is free in Zafit or covered by Pro at half the price.

Will my Fitbit stop working if I cancel Premium?

The basic tracker still works, but readiness score, deep sleep insights and personalised reports lock behind the paywall.

Is Zafit's privacy actually better than Google's?

Materially — Zafit isn't owned by an ad company, processes sensor data on-device, and has no advertising business model.

Can I keep my Fitbit and add Zafit?

Yes, common setup. Wear the Fitbit for 24/7 HR, run Zafit for nutrition, body comp, bloodwork and the AI coach.
